– Place located at 4.9km from Tarascon –

Founded in the 5th century by hermits, then occupied until the 15th century by Benedictine monks, the abbey of Saint-Roman, nestled at the top of the Aiguille hill, in the vicinity of Beaucaire, has the particularity of being entirely dug out of the rock. Unique in Western Europe, this troglodytic monastery preserves remarkable vestiges of its past. The chapel, which houses the relics of Saint Roman, the cells, the cisterns, the cellars and the open-air necropolis bear witness to this. From the upper terrace, where the ruins of a castle built in the 16th century and dismantled in the 19th century remain, the view over Provence and the Rhone valley is superb!

Perched on the Alpilles mountain range, the beautiful listed village of Les Baux-de-Provence is a must-see destination! Dominated by the ruins of its citadel, the village has charming cobbled streets lined with restored Renaissance houses. The Place Saint-Vincent, where the chapel of the Pénitents Blancs and the church of Saint-Vincent are located, offers a beautiful view on the surroundings of the village and more precisely on the valley of the Fontaine.

City of Art and History, Arles is renowned for the richness of its ancient and Roman vestiges. The city has several monuments listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites: its Roman amphitheater (the arenas); its ancient theater; the Alyscamps, an alley lined with sarcophagi; the Cryptoporticus, a network of underground galleries supporting the ancient forum; the Baths of Constantine, the portal and the cloister of Saint-Trophime. The church of Saint-Trophime, of Romanesque architecture, is an important stage on the road to Santiago de Compostela.

Arles offers a wide choice of museums such as the Museum of Ancient Arles and Provence, the Museon Arlaten (traditional art and Provencal culture), the Réattu Museum (contemporary art), the Camargue Museum.

Many places in the city, such as the garden of the health center (Espace Van Gogh), the forum square, the quays of the Rhone or the arena, have been immortalized by the famous paintings of Van Gogh during his stay in Arles. A whole Van Gogh circuit is proposed in the city, with panels representing the works of the artist at the different places where he was inspired.

Located at the gateway to the Camargue, the city has preserved its traditions: the Gardians festival, the Costume festival, the Easter and rice ferias, and bullfights in the bullring. Capital of photography, Arles organizes the international meetings of photography, famous event gathering exhibitions, evenings and conferences dedicated to this art.

Welcome to one of the smallest regional nature parks in France! With a total area of only 510 km², the Parc des Alpilles, created in 2007 in the Bouches-du-Rhône department, is spread over a limestone mountain range, around the charming little town of Saint-Rémy-de-Provence. A territory rich in biodiversity, mixing wetlands and dry areas, shaped by more than 4,000 years of civilization.

In the heart of the Alpilles mountain range, you will discover picturesque villages such as Les Baux-de-Provence and Eygalières, but also major archeological sites such as the oppidum of Caisses de Jean-Jean, the ancient site of Barbegal and the hypogeums of Fontvieille.

Magnificent, the landscape of the Alpilles will also seduce the visitors fond of beautiful walks, with its olive groves, its vineyards, its orchards, its cypress hedges, its garrigues and its pinewoods. The rural heritage is also very present, as evidenced by the farmhouses, washhouses, chapels and oratories.

As for wildlife lovers, they will be particularly spoiled in the Alpilles: nearly 250 species of birds live here, including the Bonelli’s eagle, the kestrel, the Egyptian vulture and the eagle owl.

Ideal for outdoor activities, the park will also delight sportsmen and women who enjoy climbing, hiking, horseback riding and mountain biking. On foot, on horseback or by bike, don’t hesitate to discover the many marked trails that line this superb Provencal territory!

The Vallée des Baux olive oil AOC, which concerns the production of black and green olives and olive oil of very high quality, is present on about 70% of the territory, with nearly 350,000 olive trees and a dozen olive mills, real curiosities for tourists and gourmets, who will also appreciate other renowned local products such as goat cheese and honey.

Places to discover located more than 15min

– Place located 18.5km from Tarascon –

Masterpiece of Antiquity, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Pont du Gard, built in the 1st century in order to be able to transport water from the sources of the Eure, near ‘Uzès, as far as Nîmes, has withstood the onslaught of time remarkably well. Straddling the waters of the Gardon river, this impressive Roman aqueduct bridge, with three levels of arcades, forms a magnificent symbiosis with the green setting in which it is inscribed. On the left bank of the Gardon, a very interesting museum dedicated to water, Gallo-Roman civilization and the famous work of art, completes the visit.

City of the Popes from 1309 to 1376, the historic heart of Avignon is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Protected by its ramparts, the old town has preserved wonderful testimonies of its past. Built in the 14th century, the Palais des Papes is a must-see on your visit. This fortress, residence of the popes in the 14th century, is a superb Gothic palace made up of two parts, the Old Palace and the New Palace.

The Place du Palais is also surrounded by other prestigious buildings such as the Petit Palais, former residence of the archbishops which is now a museum bringing together paintings and sculptures; the Hôtel des Monnaies and its 17th century Baroque facade; but also the Notre-Dame-des-Doms cathedral built in the 12th century.

The Place de l’Horloge, with its plane trees and café terraces, is a pleasant and lively place, especially during the Avignon festival period. The very picturesque rue des Teinturiers is ideal for walks along the Sorgue river and its pretty paddle wheels.

In July, the famous Avignon festival, “In” and “Off”, is a great moment of shows. The “In” festival, which takes place in the main courtyard of the Palais des Papes, is devoted to plays, concerts and even dance. The “Off” festival offers many shows throughout the city.

– Place located 24km from Tarascon –

City of Art and History, Nîmes is renowned for its ancient heritage and its particularly festive southern atmosphere. Remarkably preserved, the Roman amphitheater from the end of the 1st century and the beginning of the 2nd century, with a length of 133 meters and a width of 101 meters, can accommodate up to 24,000 spectators! Open to visitors, these vast arenas regularly host shows, including the famous bullfights and Camargue bull races.

Another flagship monument of the city of Nîmes, the Maison Carrée, a superb Roman temple from the end of the 1st century, with columns topped with Corinthian capitals. Opposite the Maison Carrée stands the Carré d’Art, a modern building that houses a Museum of Contemporary Art. The city of Nîmes also has a Museum of Fine Arts in which French and foreign paintings ranging from the 14th to the 19th century are exhibited.

To these multiple attractions is added the essential discovery of the Jardin de la Fontaine, a marvelous romantic park, classified as a Remarkable Garden, laid out in the 18th century around the source of Nemausus and the ancient remains of the temple of Diana and the Magne tower. Very relaxing, the walk in these places reveals a French garden in the lower part, and a succession of Mediterranean plants, pines and cedars in the upper part. From the Magne tower, at the top of Mount Cavalier, the view over the rooftops of the city is superb!

Before leaving the capital of Gard, be sure to take a stroll through the picturesque alleys of the old town and have a drink in one of the pretty squares, such as the Place du Marché, the Place aux Herbes or again the Place de l’Horloge.

As for events, the Pentecost Feria, in May, is a great festive event lasting five days during which the bull is king. In addition to its bullfights, the Feria de Nîmes is also an opportunity to party with music, to the rhythm of the bandas, in the streets of the city center.
